l à m m ề m is a film i made thinking about the ways that i have been told by my family that vietnamese people show love; the violent, the hypercrtiical, the wounded. i made this film missing this love despite all of this.

A mother tells her unborn child her version of the Vietnamese creation myth.
director’s statement:
reflecting on the documentary power of mythology, truyền thuyết is my attempt to retell the vietnamese creation myth from the generational perspectives of the women who are disconnected from the land of the myth. taking the form of a mother whispering to her child while fleeing on a boat, the mother writing in a diary, and a child attempting to remember her own creation, truyền thuyết is an ode to vietnamese-american women and the ones that came before me.

orientation to the mechanical takes a look at the phenomenon of artificial intelligence “companion” robots being made to look primarily asian. in wondering how much of the power of one of the fundamental human connections is being automated, the natural conclusion that we seem to be barreling towards is how much of our lives would we be willing to give to the machine.
